Tour options at a glance

Small Tour (B)30 min1 May – 31 Oct€7.00
Big Tour (A+B)90 min1 May – 31 Oct€13.00

The Main Tour Covers Everything

The Main Tour (A) is the one that runs year-round and covers the full castle — Lower, Middle and Upper Castle — in about 60 minutes. Adult admission is €9.00. Children aged 0–6 go free; children 0–15 pay €4.50. Students under 26, pensioners 60 and over, and visitors with disabilities all pay €4.50, and a carer accompanying a disabled visitor is free. A family ticket (2 adults plus 1 or more children) costs €22.50. If you want an English-speaking guide specifically, that's an add-on of €20.00 on top of admission. This is the tour to book if you're only visiting once and want to see the whole castle.

Small and Big Tours Run Summer Only

Two more tour options exist, but only between 1 May and 31 October. The Small Tour (B) covers just the Thurzo Palace in about 30 minutes: adult €7.00, children 0–6 free, children 0–15 €3.50, and €3.50 for students, pensioners or visitors with disabilities. The Big Tour combines A and B into a 90-minute walk through the full castle plus the palace: adult €13.00, children 0–15 €6.50, and €6.50 for students, pensioners and disabled visitors. Both carry the same €20.00 English-guide add-on as the Main Tour. Outside the May–October window, neither Small nor Big Tour is available — only the Main Tour runs.

Extras: Photos, Video, Private Hire

A few add-on costs apply regardless of which tour you book. Taking photographs requires a photo permit at €3.00; filming video requires a separate permit at €5.00 — bring a camera or phone expecting to use it, and budget for the permit rather than assuming it's included in the ticket price. If you're planning something more ambitious, the wedding chapel and Knights' Hall are available for private hire at €100–200 per hour, a genuinely unusual option for a working medieval fortress and worth investigating directly with the castle if you're considering a ceremony or event on-site rather than a standard visit.

Opening Hours Change Nearly Every Month

There's no single opening-hours pattern here — it shifts through the year. For 2026: January runs 09:00–15:00 (closed 1 January); February and March hold the same 09:00–15:00 window. April is unusually restricted — only 1–7 April (09:00–15:00) and 25–30 April (09:00–16:00) are open, with the rest of the month largely closed. May opens up to 09:00–16:00. June runs Monday–Friday 09:00–16:00 and weekends 09:00–17:00. July and August, peak season, run 08:30–17:00. September mirrors June's split. October is 09:00–16:00, November 09:00–15:00, and December is daily 09:00–15:00 except 24–26 December, when it's closed.

Guided or Self-Guided, Your Choice

Don't believe any claim that Orava is guided-tour-only — it isn't. Slovak and English-language guides run daily during the season, and Polish, German or Russian guides are available by prior arrangement if you contact the castle ahead of your visit. If you'd rather explore independently, a self-guided audioguide app is available in English, Russian, Hungarian, German and Polish, giving you the same content on your own schedule. Between the daily bilingual guided tours, the arrangeable additional languages, and the audioguide app covering five languages, most visitors will find a format that suits them without needing to book weeks in advance.

Mind the Stairs — and the Season

If you're worried about heights or have reduced mobility, the Small Tour (Thurzo Palace only) is the better fit of the three — but be clear-eyed about the limits: the castle is not accessible by pram, wheelchair or bicycle, on any tour. There's no workaround for that given the site's vertical layout. Remember too that Small and Big Tours only run 1 May to 31 October; outside that window your only option is the Main Tour, and April specifically is severely reduced, with most of the month closed. Check the exact 2026 hours above before you travel, especially if you're visiting in the shoulder months.
